A Journey Abroad: How Besson Began

“I am only moving for a year,” I said in 2018 when I left my beloved Barcelona and moved to Toronto. Today, six years later, I am launching my own swimwear brand in North America. As a European born and raised in Spain, I grew up in the Mediterranean lifestyle—slow living, a close-knit culture, leisurely days, and long vacations by the beach. What a contrast! Surprisingly though, I haven’t missed it much. To be honest, I take that as a sign that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

If you sometimes wonder about what it would be like to live somewhere new, and you feel drawn to it but are held back by uncertainty and fear, let me tell you this: just go for it. Even if it’s only for a short period, give yourself the chance to experience life outside of college, your friend group, and your workplace. Living outside your comfort zone, especially in your 20s and 30s, is without a doubt one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Why? It places you in a constant state of growth, opening your mind and challenging you to reevaluate your worldview in ways you’d never imagine otherwise.

I can’t even describe how tough and draining it’s been at times to start a new life in Toronto. It’s been a long journey, with many ups and downs. But, for me, everything changed the day I decided to start my own business because that’s also the day I began working toward finding my purpose in life—I just didn’t know it yet.
